“True wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world around us.” Socrates
From Athens to Crete, Santorini to Mykonos and Delos, with many hidden treasures along the way, we will share together this fantastic hiking adventure of the Greek Isles. We will be enticed by local cuisine and volcanic wines, or sample the celebratory tones of Raki; gaze endlessly at the bluest of seas and lose ourselves in labyrinths of cobbled lanes leading to peaceful coves and sun swept beaches. We will hike amongst Classical Greek ruins and learn how this early civilization shaped the very world we exist in today. Our path is rich with ruins of Greek and Roman origin, unique Byzantine churches, cultural heritage and the beauty of legendary dramatic landscapes. We will even visit a unique vineyard that has a conservational outlook for the entire island.
The god Apollo himself was born on these islands, so could there be a more appropriate place for a journey of discovery?
Our trip is an active hiking excursion that is full of variety, including Crete’s legendary hike through the Samaria Gorge, and the most famous hike of the Cycladic Islands – along Santorini’s legendary caldera between Fira and Oia towns. Considered Crete’s prettiest natural coastal area, the historic sites of Elafonissi will pass beneath our feet. Also on Santorini is Kamari, a seaside location where we begin a hike to Ancient Thira – a significant Classical Greek site perched 1,000 feet above sea level on a rocky mountain spur. Our journey takes us also to the island of Mykonos, which besides its reputation as the nightlife capital of the Greek Islands, offers a captivating labyrinth of stone-paved lane ways, traditional whitewashed houses and… wait for it: windmills!
This trip takes us to archaeological sites including the Acropolis and the Parthenon in Athens, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Delos, one of the most important sites of archaeology in Greece. New discoveries of ancient archaeological wonders are still made here from time to time. Considered a sacred place, Delos is the acclaimed birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. It has been inhabited since around 3000 BC!
